you totally need to add pearl jam’s “binaural” to your list. good luck finding it on vinyl, but it is a beautifully crafted, atmospheric and at times, challenging record.
it has a rather jarring flow, and there’s threads all over the pearl jam boards about rearranging the track list (not to mention adding in 3 – 5 of the excellent b-sides that should have been included on the album), but it contains some of my favorite songs from the band.
they set a water mark for this record that i honestly believe they’ve yet to hit again.
Love the suggestion! We’ll add it to the list.
you guys are alright, and love that outkast “stankonia” is on the list. i need to hear that one again myself.
another suggestion – ben folds five’s “unauthorized biography of reinhold messner.”
yea, i know, terrible title, but there are some dripping wet ballads on this record. the band was writing and performing at their finest. 4/5 of the way through the record, it builds to this insanely dramatic climax and the last couple songs are a nice comedown.
there’s a theme throughout this record, but it’d be hard to call it a “concept record.” to give you an idea, it starts off with a song called “narcolepsy” and ends with a record called “lullabye.”
“reinhold messner” was apparently the name a bunch of teenagers were using on a fake id when ben folds was younger, so i think the idea is, once you listen to the lyrics and take in the music, you get the sense that the narrator spent most of his teens and twenties just fuckin off and never found himself, hence the fake id reference in the title.
